Sunday and Bank Holiday Competitions

President’s Day Trophy – 2024

Originally planned for Sunday 8th September, the 2024 President’s Day Trophy competition was delayed by a week due to adverse weather conditions. But in glorious sunshine, 42 members came together on Sunday 15th September to play 2 games of 8 ends. The format was a 10 point game, where the closest shot to the jack scored 4 points, the second closest scored 3 points and so on. Added to that, each team could nominate one power play end in each game where any points scored were doubled. The scoring system meant that both teams could pick shots on each end and the limitations of the score boards were exposed!

At the end of the two games, there were 3 teams who had won both games, so the winners and runners up were determined by shot difference. But it wasn’t that straightforward. Both second placed teams had 4 points and exactly the same shot difference. So it was down to ends won – which were also both exactly the same! So then it went down to shots ‘for’ which finally was the deciding factor in determining 2nd place, with the team of Sue Cockle, Sheila Baudains and Bernie Freer just beating Maurice Andrieux, Tony Morton and Anne Moon by 1 shot!

But the undisputed winners were Don Le Quesne, Tom Hunt and and new member Rita McAvoy with a shot difference of +57. Congratulations to them and to all who took part in an enjoyable afternoon of bowls.

Captain’s Day – 2024

Captain’s Day is traditionally an all day competition followed by a BBQ. As with recent years, the teams are not drawn for the whole day, but are drawn before the start of each of the four games. And so, for each of the sessions during the day, the teams and the rink to be played on are completely unknown until the draw is made. In most cases, the teams are completely different. But in others, players could be drawn with or against someone they have been paired with previously. The draw also determines on which rinks the games are played, meaning that a player does not necessarily play on four different rinks, as would normally be the case. Players score 2 points for a win and 1 for a draw and each team member is awarded the total number of team shots achieved in their games. At the end of the day, the winners are the most successful skip, the most successful number two and the most successful lead, all of whom may not have played together during the day!

41 players in 14 teams took to the green in perfect conditions to contest this year’s event. With bright clothing the order of the day, the green was once again awash with colour.

There was plenty of banter both on and off the green, especially when the draws for each round were made, and the day was rounded off with an excellent BBQ for members and guests.

Results for 2024 were as follows:

Lead: winner: Gill Blampied (8 Points, +33 shots)

Runner-up: David Leese (6 points, +27 shots)

#2: winner: Dave Robinson (8 points, +21 shots)

Runner-up: Tom Hunt (7 points, +31 shots)

Skip: winner: Stewart McGinnie (8 points, +27 shots)

Runner-up: Josh Band (6 points, +11 shots)

Dubois Charity Shield – 2024

**** £1200 raised for Dementia Jersey!! ****

Each year the members of Sun Bowls Club come together to compete for our prestigious charity shield. All monies raised on this day and in various events throughout the season are presented to our nominated charity. This year club members voted to support Dementia Jersey
On the green, weather conditions were good with players enjoying a bright sunny day with a cooling pleasant breeze.
38 players in teams of 2 and 3 played 4 games each across 6 rinks. The green was running quickly leading to some competitive bowls and interesting score lines. 3 teams entered the last of their 4 games in contention for the big prize but the team skipped by Maurice Andrieux dropped 2 points on their final game finishing on 6 points. In second place were Eileen Vowden/Nigel Long, Alan Le Sueur and Terri Boss-Andrieux winning 3 and drawing 1 finishing with 7 points and a shots difference of +10. The only team winning all 4 games and playing as a pair were club President Peter Davis and Stewart McGinnie with 8 points and a shots difference of +24.

Following competition on the green, players and club members met for tea and cakes and a presentation where the fabulous shield was awarded to the winners. A raffle completed the event and £1200 will be forwarded to Dementia Jersey.

Roy Dupre Trophy 2024

Ron Romeril Rose Bowl 2024

The Ron Romeril Rose Bowl is a Sunday competition in only its second year. The magnificent silver rose bowl was donated by Ronnie to the Club in 2023. For 2024, 14 triples teams contested the silverware in mostly glorious conditions and played out on a green which was running very well.

The competition, on this occasion, consisted of 3 games of 6 ends in order to be finished before the England Euro 24 last 16 match v Slovakia. Once again, it was good to see new members taking part in their first competition alongside more established club members.

Three teams finished with 2 wins out of their 3 games, but two teams remained unbeaten at the end for the afternoon.

Taking second place with 6 points and a +15 shot difference was the team of Keith Chapman, Dave Robinson and Moira Larkin. But taking the honours this time around was the team led by Dave De Gruchy, along with Peter Davis and Kate Achier with 6 points and a +19 shot difference.

The trophy was presented by Ron himself at the end of an enjoyable afternoon.

Mary and Phil Le Quesne Trophy 2024

36 Players joined in our annual tournament competing for the Phil and Mary Le Quesne Trophy. The green was in superb condition for the full day of bowls where12 teams of 3 each played 4, 8 end games across the 6 rinks. The weather was fine with a cool northerly breeze making playing conditions as good as they could be for early June. In a departure from the norm, none of the 12 teams won all of their 4 games showing the quality competitive but friendly bowls.
4 teams won 3 from 4 scoring 6 from the possible 8 points. In second place with a shots difference of +11 were Tony Osmont, Melvyn Birch and Helen Wood but leading the table and winners of the attractive Phil and Mary Le Quesne Shield with a shots difference of +15 were Russell Eyre, Josh Band and playing in her first major competition, Gill Blampied.
Phil and Mary who are active members of the club were present to award the winners their trophy. Our tournaments will continue through the season but of note will be our sponsored “Open” which will be attended by bowlers invited from all of Bowls Jersey Clubs and will take place on the weekend of 17th and 18th August with the draw being made on Friday 16th.

Tom Kidd Trophy 2024

Arguably, the most prestigious trophy to be won at the Sun Bowls Club is the Tom Kidd Trophy, a magnificent glass trophy with a glass floating globe. Tom, a much respected member of the Sun Bowls Club, tragically died in Thailand in 2000 when on one of the many winter cruises he enjoyed. However, he generously left a legacy to the Club in his Will that ‘a trophy be purchased in my name for a drawn fours competition, to be played each year by members of the club only, and that following each yearly competition, Club members and officials shall be given a meal with wine‘. That legacy was enjoyed by Club members for some 16 years. Although the legacy is now exhausted, the competition lives on in Tom’s memory. The competition is now followed by a BBQ at the Club prepared by members of the Committee and helpers.

The Tom Kidd competition is an all-day event played out over 4 games of 8 ends. Twelve drawn triples teams took to the green on a bright but chilly Bank Holiday Sunday at the end of May to contest the coveted trophy.

At the end of what was an enjoyable day with some closely fought games, two teams finished with 3 wins out of their 4 games and were only separated by shot difference. With 6 points and a +20 shots difference were the team of Ross Davis, Doreen Barette/Joan Whelan and Dave Robinson. However, just beating them in to second place was the team led by Russell Eyre, along with Margaret Le Sueur and Derek Wood/Helen Wood, with a shot difference of +23.

The winners this year were the only team to complete the day unbeaten in their 4 games. With 8 points and a +10 shot difference the trophy was won by the team of Club Captain Kevin Andrieux, Club President Peter Davis and Club Secretary Terri-Boss Andrieux. Congratulations to them and also to all who took part.

Gordon Bewhay Trophy 2024

In the fourth meeting in our series of Sunday tournaments, 48 members of the Sun Bowls Club competed for the Gordon Bewhay Trophy. Competition was tight with 16 teams of 3 playing 3 games of 6 ends. Playing across all 8 rinks for the second time this season we were full to capacity, once again showing great response from our new members, some playing their first competitive game.
The green was in excellent playing condition, thanks to our dedicated grounds team and the weather was fine with a light breeze.
Due to the close competitive nature of the play, only two teams won all three games with a further five teams taking two of their three games.
In second place with three wins and a shot difference of +10 were Tony Osmont, Maureen Poree and Ken Corbin.
The winners and recipients of the beautiful silver Gordon Bewhay Trophy were Russell Eyre, Carmella Knight and Anne Moon taking all three games with a shots difference of +14.
The late Gordon Bewhay’s son, club member John Bewhay, was able to present the trophy in his father’s memory.

Buckfield Trophy 2024

The latest in a full programme of Sunday Competitions at the Sun Bowls Club was held on Sunday 12th May. The Buckfield Trophy is a half day competition consisting of 3 games of 8 ends. This year the trophy was played for by the full complement of 16 triples teams (48 players in total) across all 8 rinks, the first time that this has happened for a very long while. It is encouraging to know that these Sunday competitions remain very popular with members old and new.

3 teams finished with 2 wins from their three games. However, on this occasion, there were 3 teams who won all three of their games. In third place with 6 points and +10 shot difference was the team of Tony Osmont (skip), Monica De Gruchy and new bowler, just a couple of weeks into his first season, David Jordan. In second place, also with 6 points but a shot difference of +17 was the team led by Don Le Quesne, supported by Tom Hunt and Carmella Knight.

But the winners were the team of Greg Davis, Tony Morton and Helen Wood, who achieved 6 points and a very impressive +27 shot difference. Congratulations to them and also to all who took part. It was great to see a full green of bowlers enjoying the occasion and producing some good and competitive games on what was a very successful afternoon.

Margaret and Garnet Hafey Liberation Day Trophy 2024

Patriotic colours were the order of the day for the annual Liberation Day Trophy at the Sun Bowls Club. And so with bunting around the clubhouse and members dressed in various combinations of red, white and blue, the Margaret and Garnet Hafey Trophy was contested on Thursday May 9th in glorious conditions. 34 members took to the green for 4 games of 8 ends, which were played out in a friendly but competitive atmosphere with some close – and some not so close – encounters. Once again, the green was in near perfect condition, thanks in no small part to our greenkeeper Bob and his team.

3 teams finished the day with 3 wins from their 4 games. In fourth place with 6 points and a +9 shot difference were the team of Sue Cockle, Peter Davis and Derek/Helen Wood. In third place, also with 6 points but with a +11 shot difference was the team of Ross Davis and Maureen Poree. In the runners up spot with 6 points and an impressive +29 shot difference was the team led by new member Stewart McGinnie along with Tony Morton and Monica De Gruchy.

But with a full house of 4 wins out of 4, the winners were the team of Abbey Andrieux and Josh Band with 8 points and a very commendable +32 shot difference.

After the games, members enjoyed tea and cake or a drink from the bar and the day was deemed to be a great success enjoyed by all who took part.

Mary Kidd Trophy – Ladies Day

The second Sunday Competition of the 2024 season at the Sun Bowls Club took place on Sunday 21st April and saw 44 players take to the green to contest the Mary Kidd Trophy. As it was Ladies Day, all 16 teams were skipped by ladies and players were encouraged to wear something pink. It was a wonderful turnout and saw the maximum 8 rink capacity filling the green for 3 eight end games on what was a bright but chilly day. The green was looking good and running very well for early season.

At the end of what was a most enjoyable afternoon, 7 teams finished with two wins from their three games. However, two teams finished the afternoon unbeaten, each scoring 6 points and were only separated by shot difference.

Finishing in the runners-up spot with a shot difference of +14 were the team of Margaret Andrieux (skip), Peter Davis and Ken Corbin. But with an impressive shot difference of +23, the winners were the team led by Pat De Gruchy, together with Russell Eyre and Moira Larkin. Congratulations to them and to all who took part.

Devonshire Trophy 2024

The Devonshire Trophy is traditionally contested as the Opening Day Competition each season. And so, the 2024 season began on Sunday 14th April in bright conditions albeit a little bit fresh at times. The day consisted of three x 8 end games of predominantly triples. An impressive 40 members took part, including some new bowlers, so the green was full to get the season under way.

After gathering around the flagpole to stand for a minute’s silence to remember those members who we have lost since the first day of last season, the first woods of 2024 were delivered in the ‘spider’. Spread out around the green and standing with one foot in the ditch, each player bowled one wood to a jack placed in the centre of the green. The winner was the player whose wood finished closest to the final resting position of the jack. This year, Don Le Quesne was the closest and he received a bottle of wine as a prize.

Then it was in to the first of the three games to be played. Considering that it was very early in the season, the green was running well, if a little heavy, so full length jacks were discouraged in order to give everyone a fighting chance. There were some very competitive games all played in good spirit and the day was enjoyed by all who took part.

6 teams finished with 2 wins from their 3 games, so the runners-up spot was decided on shot difference. Taking the honours with 4 points and a +11 shot difference was the team led by Ann Cross, along with Jim Larkin and Derek Wood.

The winners were the only team to win all 3 of their games. Dave De Gruchy and Denise Pallot finished with 6 points and a +14 shot difference and therefore took the silverware for the season opener. Congratulations to them and to all who took part in what was a good and enjoyable start to the season.
