Closing Day 2021 – Roy Cornwall Trophy
It hardly seems possible that another season has come and gone, but at least this was a season where we could do much of what we were used to in terms of leagues and competitions and visiting teams and without many of the restrictions of the 2020 season.
Closing Day 2021 saw 16 triples fill the green for the last games of the season. The format was was 4 games of 8 ends. On the plus side, each team had the opportunity to play a powerplay end in each game where whatever they scored on that end was doubles. On the negative side, the penalty for burning an end was increased from 3 to 5 shots against.
In fine weather conditions for late September, the games got under way at 10am. There were some keenly contested games and plenty of friendly banter to be heard across the green throughout the day.
At the end of the day, there were 4 teams who finished on 7 points so the runners-up spot was decided on shot difference. With an impressive +29 shots it was the team of Terry Le Mottee, Colin Rabet and Abbey Andrieux who clinched second place.
However, winning all 4 games and therefore finishing with 8 points and a +21 shot difference, the winners were Tony Osmont, Fay Le Mottee and Jim Larkin (pictured below)

Captain’s Day 2021
Following on from the success of the last couple of years, the format for this year’s Captain’s day was set to be 4 games of 8 ends followed by a BBQ. However, instead of having the same teams for the whole day, each session began with a fresh ‘live’ draw before play began. With names begin drawn ‘out of a hat’ for each position, it meant that teams were drawn at random so no-one knew who they were going to play with in each session. The draw brought about some interesting combinations of players and unlike normal competition days, some players were drawn to play on the same rink more than once. The draw for each session was keenly awaited and produced many cheers and laughs as the teams were drawn out.
The four games were all different. The 1st game had a scoring system of 3, 2, 1 and 1 extra point for a ‘toucher’. For some, this scoring system was quite a challenge! The 2nd game was a ‘yardstick’ game, where any wood within 1 yard of the jack counted. Although the term ‘yard’ is used frequently in bowls, it is surprising how there is a different conception of a yard from one bowler to the next! Thankfully, a yardstick was provided for measuring purposes. Game 3 was a straightforward game with normal scoring as was game 4, except that in this last game, ends 2, 5 and 8 were ‘powerplay’ ends, whereby any score achieved was doubled.
Because of the changing teams, players received individual scores based on their teams shot difference in each of the four games, meaning that it was virtually impossible to track who was leading in each position as the day went on! And so, when it came to the prizegiving at the end of the day, no one had any idea who was going to win. Prizes were awarded for first and second places in each of the four positions and were as follows:
Skips: 1st: Scott Ruderham (+23); Runner-up: Joan Renouf (+22)
Threes: 1st: Kevin Andrieux (+35); Runner-up: Russell Eyre (+6)
Twos: 1st: Ron Romeril (+35); Runner-up: Phil Bichard (+19)
Leads: 1st: Jim (wrong bias) Larkin (+30); Runner-up: Anne Moon (+25)
Players and guests enjoyed an excellent BBQ after the games and a great time was had by all. Many thanks to Club Captains Terry and Fay Le Mottee for organising such a hugely successful and enjoyable day!
The winners for each can be seen in the photo below : Jim Larkin, Scott Ruderham, Captain Terry Le Mottee, Kevin Andrieux and Ron Romeril.
