Sun Bowls Finals – 2022

Sun Bowls Club: Finals Weekend 2022

At the end of a busy season, members of the Sun Bowls Club came together for the annual Finals Weekend, with 17 titles being contested. In bright and dry if slightly chilly conditions at times, the weekend began on Saturday morning with the Ladies, Men’s and Open Pairs. These keenly contested games set the tone for the weekend with the Open Pairs going right down to the wire with victory to Don Le Quesne and Norman Queree over Malcolm De Sousa and Matt Herve by one shot. In the other games there were wins for Sue Cockle and Margaret Le Marquand and Nigel Long and Tony Morton in the Ladies and Men’s Pairs respectively.

In the afternoon session, Maurice and Margaret Andrieux overcame Terry and Fay Le Mottee in the Married Pairs whilst Don Le Quesne continued his winning ways from the Men’s Pairs in the morning when he was joined by Greg Davis (skip) and Anne Moon (lead) in a convincing win over Matt Herve, Ann Cross and Melvyn Birch in the Mixed Drawn Triples. In the first of the singles games of the weekend, Sue Cockle beat Margaret Le Sueur in the final of the Ladies Saturday Singles whilst Club Captain Kevin Andrieux beat Russell Eyre in the Men’s Saturday Singles final.

On the Sunday morning, spectators were treated to a masterclass of bowls as 4 of the 5 singles games played finished with a scoreline of 21-20. Greg Davis was unlucky to move the jack with his last wood to give his brother Ross the 2 shots he needed for victory in the Open Singles. In the other very close matches, which could have gone either way, Norman Queree took the honours over Maurice Andrieux in the Over 55s, Malcolm De Sousa came from behind to beat Scott Ruderham in the Men’s Handicap and in the Ladies equivalent, Ann Cross beat Jackie Knight, also by a single shot. In the Ladies Novice a 21-16 scoreline was enough to give a nervous Kate Achler the win over Sarah Holland in another excellent contest.

In the final session of the weekend, the games were equally well contested. In the Mixed Drawn Fours, Matt Herve finally got his first win of the weekend together with Margaret Andrieux, John Bewhay and Blake Albert. In the Men’s Novice, Bradley Vowden overcame Derek Wood, both of whom reached the final in their first season as playing members. In the Men’s and Ladies Championship finals there were wins for Ross Davis over Norman Queree and Alison Camacho over Eileen Vowden respectively. In the Veteran Pairs, Dave De Gruchy drew an excellent final wood when facing defeat to level the game at 18-18. But his efforts were ultimately to be in vain. An extra end was played, in which the holding shot changed several times before Maurice Andrieux and Winston Turner finally secured the win.

The standard of play over the weekend was excellent and provided a fitting conclusion to the 2022 season. Well done to all the finalists and runners-up.
