Congratulations to Ross Davis for defending the Men’s Island Champion of Champions title this weekend. In what is believed to be a ‘first’, both the mens and ladies titles were retained by last year’s winners so congratulations also go to Doreen Moon representing St Brelade who, like Ross, was unbeaten over the weekend. In the men’s competition, Malcolm de Sousa finished in the runners-up spot, on shot difference. In the ladies competition, Fay Le Mottee came up against some tough opposition but held her own in her games but, on this occasion, it was not meant to be. All three Sun Bowlers represented themselves and the Club excellently. The standard of bowls over the weekend was at times exceptional. Congratulations to all who competed and to all those who went along to support all of the bowlers.

Commonwealth Games update: Thursday 5th April

Jersey’s Men’s Triples, consisting of skip Ross Davis, #2 Malcolm De Sousa (both Sun Bowls) and lead Derek Boswell (JBC), get off to a great start in the Gold Coast by beating hosts Australia 21 – 18 followed by a 27 – 4 victory over Botswana. With games tomorrow against Fiji and Brunei they are well placed at the moment to go through from the round robin stage. We wish them well!

Update: Sunday 8th April

The team continued their good form against Fiji, winning by a 21 – 10 margin. Their final group game against Brunei was a tense affair, finally finishing 11 – 11, with Ross having to draw shot with his last wood to rescue a point. But that point meant that they topped the group with 10 points, with hosts Australia in second place on 9 points. Both teams would therefore go through to the quarterfinal draw.

In the quarterfinals, Jersey were drawn against Canada. On the day, and although the Jersey boys played well, the Canadians proved too strong and ended up 17 – 7 winners. Nevertheless, it was a great achievement for the trio to top their group and make the quarterfinals and they can be justifiably proud of that.

The Ladies Fours team, which included our own Eileen Vowden and Joan Renouf, had a difficult campaign in a tough group, eventually losing out to New Zealand (15 – 20), Zambia (9 – 22), Norfolk Island (13 – 21) and South Africa (7 – 19).

Eileen and Joan will now play in the Ladies Triple with Doreen Moon, while Malcolm will play in the men’s singles. We wish them well.
