Roy Cornwall Trophy 2025 – Closing Day
The Roy Cornwall trophy is contested on the last day of the season each year before the green is ‘put to bed’ for the winter. 41 members in total took to the green for the final time for 2025 playing 4 games of 8 ends. In spite of some early drizzle, the weather was kind to the bowlers and some keenly contested games were played out on a green still in remarkably good condition, thanks in no small part to our greenkeeper, Bob.
At the end of the day, all teams had won at least 1 game out of four. Just missing out on the runners-up spot with 3 wins out of 4 was the team of Cathy Le Sueur, Harry Barbet and John Luce.
Two teams, however, managed a full house of wins thus the final outcome was decided on shot difference. Maureen Poree, Ann Hunt and Ray Langdon took the runners-up position with a shot difference of +10. But taking the honours on this occasion was the team led by Josh Band, along with Denise Pallot and Moira Larkin, with a very impressive shot difference of +25.
And so another busy season came to an end and the members now look forward to next April and the start of the 2026 campaign.

Captain’s Day – 2025
Captain’s Day is traditionally an all-day competition followed by a BBQ. As with recent years, the teams are not drawn for the whole day, but are drawn before the start of each of the four games. And so, for each of the sessions during the day, the teams and the rink to be played on are completely unknown until the draw is made. In most cases, the teams are completely different. But in others, players could be drawn with or against someone they have been paired with previously. The draw also determines on which rinks the games are played, meaning that a player does not necessarily play on four different rinks, as would normally be the case. Players score 2 points for a win and 1 for a draw and each team member is awarded the total number of team shots achieved in their games. At the end of the day, the winners are the most successful skip, the most successful number two and the most successful lead, all of whom may not have played together during the day!
A total of 48 players in 16 teams took to the green in somewhat warm conditions to contest this year’s event. With bright clothing the order of the day, the green was once again awash with colour.
There was plenty of banter both on and off the green, especially when the draws for each round were made, and the day was rounded off with an excellent BBQ for members and guests.
Results for 2025 were as follows:
Lead: winner: Alan Booth (7 Points, +10 shots)
Runner-up: Bernie Freer (6 points, +18 shots)
#2: winner: Tony Morton (8 points, +19 shots)
Runner-up: Melvyn Birch (7 points, +14 shots)
Skip: winner: Cathy Le Sueur (8 points, +20 shots)
Runner-up: Scott Ruderham (6 points, +4 shots)

President’s Day Trophy 2025
In mostly overcast and blustery conditions, 46 members (including some new members and also one of our junior members) recently took part in the President’s Day Trophy at the Sun Bowls Club. All eight rinks were in use meaning that the green was full as the competition played out over 3 games of 8 ends. For this competition, however, each team had a ‘joker’ to play on one end in each game meaning that whatever they scored on that end – if they scored anything – the shots were doubled. The only stipulation was that the joker had to be declared before the end began.
At the end of a competitive but friendly afternoon of bowls, 3 teams finished their 3 games undefeated, therefore scoring 6 points. Each of the 3 teams had impressive shot difference. The winners with +33 were Russell Eyre, Jackie Knight and John Luce, who were presented with their winners vouchers and the silver Trophy by Club President, Peter Davis.
The runners-up position could not have been closer. Both teams not only finished with a shot difference of +30, their ‘shots for’ was also identical (39)! The team that achieved second place, by virtue of scoring more shots in one of their games, was the team of Fay Le Mottee, Jenny Rimeur and Stephen Messenger who had a 17-2 win in their second game. Just missing out on the runners-up spot with a 16-1 scoreline were the team of Tony Osmont, Ann Hunt and Jim McKenna. Congratulations to all who took part in what was an enjoyable afternoon on the green.
Next up will be Captain’s Day on Sunday 24th August, an all day competition followed by a BBQ. This is always a popular and fun event run in a different format to the usual Sunday programme.

Dubois Charity 2025
**** £1500 raised for Family Nursing and Home Care!! ****
Each year the members of Sun Bowls Club come together to compete for the prestigious Dubois Charity Shield. All monies raised on the day through green fees, bacon rolls and raffle tickets along with donations to the tips jar on the bar and the ‘wrong bias’ pot over the last year are added together to be given to the charity chosen by members at the previous AGM. This year club members voted to support Family Nursing and Home Care.
On the green, weather conditions were good with players enjoying a bright sunny day with a cooling pleasant breeze. 39 players in teams of 3 played 4 games each across 6 rinks. The green was running well leading to some competitive bowls and interesting score lines.
At the end of the day, 3 teams finished with 3 wins out of 4. With a shot difference of +4 were Maurice and Margaret Andrieux and David Syvret, while Cathy Le Sueur, Tom Hunt and Georges Provaux finished with +9. Securing 3rd place overall with +19 was the team led by Club Captain Kevin Andrieux, along with Babs Kittleson and Bernie Freer.
However, 2 teams finished with a full house of 4 wins. In the runners-up spot with an impressive +21 shot difference were Jim Larkin, Tony Morton and Moira Larkin/Maurice Boreland. But securing the trophy with an even more impressive +31 shot difference were Dave De Gruchy, Denise Pallot and James McKenna. Congratulations to them and to all who took part.
Following competition on the green, players and club members gathered in the clubhouse for tea and cakes and a presentation where the fabulous shield was awarded to the winners. A large raffle completed the very successful day. Club President, Peter Davis thanked the members for their donations of raffle prizes and their generosity and announced that the magnificent sum of £1500 will be forwarded to Family Nursing and Home Care.

Ron Medder Trophy 2025
In spite of the weather forecast, the Ron Medder Trophy 2025 at the Sun Bowls Club was played in good conditions, if a little windy. 40 members took part playing 3 games of 8 ends, the usual format for a half day Sunday competition.
Of the 14 teams, four finished with 2 wins from their 3 games. Taking a clear 3rd place was the team led by Dave Robinson (with Jill Barbet and Maurice Boreland) who scored 4 points with a +25 shot difference. Following on behind them, also with 4 points, were the teams led by Tim Knight (+9), Eileen Vowden (+8) and Tony Osmont (+2).
However, 2 teams achieved a full house of 3 wins from 3 games played. In the runners up spot, with 6 points and +12 shot difference, were Cathy Le Sueur, Georges Provaux and Ray Langdon. But with 6 points and a magnificent +27 shot difference were Dave De Gruchy, Jackie Knight and Mel Hales. Congratulations to them and to all who took part in what was an enjoyable afternoon of competitive but friendly bowls.

Phil and Mary Le Quesne Trophy 2025
The annual Phil and Mary Le Quesne Trophy is one of four all-day Sunday competitions held at the Sun Bowls Club. This year, the trophy was contested by 10 triples teams playing 4 games of 8 ends. The day began with overcast and windy conditions but the improved as the day progressed. The green was, once again, in perfect condition for the players to enjoy and some close games and some good bowling kept the spectators enthralled.
At the end of an enjoyable day, 3 teams finished with three wins from their four games and therefore finishing on 6 points. The teams led by Cathy Le Sueur, (with Peter Davis/Jenny Rimeur and Gordon Peacock/Rita McAvoy) and Eileen Vowden (with Tony Morton and Ray Langdon) finished with -8 and +6 shot difference respectively. But with a shot difference of +9, it was the team of Tony Osmont, Dave Robinson and Anne Moon who claimed the runners-up spot.
Only one team completed the day unbeaten. Ross Davis led his team of Denise Pallot and Bernard Freer to a clear victory with 8 points and a very impressive +30 shot difference. Congratulations to them and to all the bowlers who took part. Phil and Mary Le Quesne, who are both staunch supporters of the Sun Bowls Club, presented their trophy to the winning team.

Gordon Bewhay Trophy 2025
The Gordon Bewhay Trophy was the latest Sunday competition trophy to be contested at the Sun Bowls Club. Originally planned for early May, it was postponed to a later date due to lack of numbers being able to play. However, 40 players took part on the 22nd June on a glorious sunny and warm day. It was the usual format for a half day Sunday competition with 3 games of 8 ends played in a triples format.
At the end of an enjoyable afternoon’s play, 4 teams finished with 2 wins from their 3 games, with shot differences ranging from -4 to +12. Tied in 3rd place were the teams of Bob Le Sueur, Jill Barbet and Ray Langdon along with Dave Robinson, Derek Wood and new bowler Mary Le Brocq, both with 4 points and +12 shot difference. But by virtue of 2 wins and a draw, it was the team of Cathy Le Sueur, Babs Kittleson and Malcolm Gallichan who took the runners-up spot with 5 points and +18 shot difference.
However, the only team to win all 3 games was led by Margaret Le Sueur, along with John Bewhay and another new bowler James McKenna with 6 points and +15 shot difference, who took the honours and received the trophy. This was the first time that John has won his father’s trophy after many years of trying. The trophy was presented by John’s wife, Noella. Congratulations to them and all the other bowlers who took part.

Ron Romeril Rose Bowl 2025
The newest trophy in the Sun Bowls cabinet, the magnificent silver Ron Romeril Rose Bowl, was competed for in cool blustery conditions. The trophy was donated by Ronnie in 2023. Now in his 90s, Ronnie doesn’t bowl any more but it was a pleasure to welcome him, and his wife Trish, to the Club again this year to present his trophy to the winning team.
14 triples teams of all abilities meant that the trophy was keenly contested across 3 x 8 end games. Three teams finished with 2 wins and a draw and therefore achieving 5 points. And so, once again, shot difference decided the eventual runners up. With +19, it was the duo of Russell Eyre and Ann Moon who took second place ahead of Maurice Andrieux, Alan Le Sueur and Claire Hutton with +9 and Josh Band, Marie Jacques and Peter Blampied with +5.
But with a full house of 3 wins and therefore 6 points it was the team of Colin Rabet, David Syvret and Kate Achler who took home the trophy for 2025. Congratulations to them and especially to Kate, who has her name on the trophy for the second year running. Tea and cake concluded the afternoon and the President thanked all the bowlers for taking part, as well as the ladies who had provided the lovely cakes, the bar staff and green staff.

Tom Kidd Trophy 2025
2025 was the 25th anniversary of the Tom Kidd Trophy competition. Tom was a well loved and respected member of the Sun Bowls Club who bequeathed a large sum of money in his Will to the Club specifically for the enjoyment of the members. Hence, Club members were able to enjoy ‘a meal with wine’ for a good number of years after competing on the green for the magnificent floating globe glass trophy. Tom’s legacy is now exhausted but the competition lives on and is now followed by a BBQ.
A full compliment of 16 triples teams took to the green to play 4 games of 8 ends over the course of the day to compete for arguably the most prestigious trophy at the Club. The team skipped by Jim Larkin, together with Maureen Poree and Tom Hunt, were the only team to win all 4 of their games and therefore took the honours for 2025.
The runners-up were decided on shot difference, with 4 teams achieving 3 wins from their 4 games. With a shot difference of -4, Club Captain Kevin Andrieux and his team of Terri Boss-Andrieux and Jackie Knight finished in 5th place. In 4th place with +5 shot difference was Greg Davis, Jenny Rimeur/Sheila Baudains and Carmella Knight whilst Ross Davis’ team of John Bewhay and Anne Moon finished in 3rd place with +22. But with a shot difference of +28, the runners-up for 2025 were the trio of Josh Band, Tim Knight and Rita McAvoy.
It was good to see a full green once again, made up of bowlers of all abilities, proving that these regular Sunday competitions are very popular as well as being keenly contested games played in a supportive and friendly atmosphere. This full day competition was followed by an excellent BBQ for 60 people prepared by the Committee and helpers which rounded off another good bowling day.

Margaret and Garnet Hafey Trophy – Liberation Day 2025
Patriotic colours were the order of the day for the annual Liberation Day competition for the Margaret and Garnet Hafey trophy. Over 40 bowlers, including some new bowlers playing in their first competitive game, took to the green in glorious but breezy conditions for an ‘all day’ competition consisting of 4 games of eight ends. With players following the dress code, the green was awash with various shades of red, white and blue which made for a colourful spectacle for this popular event.
The draw was done on the morning of the competition with the only stipulation being that the teams must be mixed. 14 teams of triples contested the trophy, played out on an excellent green and, as is always the case, there were some very close games – and some that were not so close!
At the end of the day, 3 teams had achieved 3 wins and a draw from their 4 games, resulting in a score of 7 points in total. Once again, it was down to shot difference to decide who took the spoils. In third place, with a shot difference of +11 was the team led by Andy Achler along with Monica De Gruchy and new bowler Corinne Provaux. The runners up position was taken by Cathy Le Sueur and Derek Wood with an impressive shot difference of +20.
But with an even more impressive shot difference of +37, the Liberation Day Trophy was won by Greg Davis, Harry Barbet and Ellen McNally. Congratulations to them and to all who took part in what was a fun and enjoyable day.

Buckfield Trophy 2025
Thirty six bowlers took to the green in warm and sunny conditions to contest the Buckfield Trophy. The usual format of three games of 8 ends was the order of the day, and all of the games were played as triples. As is always the case for Sunday competitions there were some keenly contested games but they were played out in a friendly atmosphere with plenty of banter on the green.
Unusually, on this occasion, not one team managed to win all 3 of their games but there were 6 teams who each achieved 2 wins and 1 loss to register 4 points in total. And so the honours were determined by shot difference. Teams led by Abbey Andrieux, Anne Richardson, Eileen Vowden and Dave De Gruchy achieved shot differences of 13, 8, 5 and 2 respectively and finished just outside the prizes. Taking the runners-up spot was skip Don Le Quesne along with Denise Pallot and Ray Langdon who, aided by achieving a ‘hotshot’ (all 9 woods counting on one end) achieved a shot difference of +17.
But with a shot difference of +22, it was the team of Nigel Long, Jim Larkin and Ellen McNally who took the honours for this competition. Congratulations to them and to all who took part in what was another successful and enjoyable afternoon.

Mary Kidd Trophy – Ladies Day 2025
Following on from the success of the Opening Day competition, the Mary Kidd Trophy is a half day competition which sees the ladies take charge. With another full house of 48 bowlers, all the skips are ladies and the men have to do as they are told! Because it is Ladies Day, bowlers are encouraged to wear something pink and the majority of players entered in to the spirit of the occasion on a bright and sunny afternoon.
The competition consisted of 3 games of 8 ends which were played in a friendly but competitive manner with a good standard of bowls on show in some very close encounters. Out of the 16 teams taking part, 2 teams finished with 2 wins and a draw from their 3 games therefore scoring 5 points. Just missing out on the runners-up spot was the team led by Abbey Andrieux along with Andy Achler and George Reid, who finished with a +18 shot difference. But it was the team of Eileen Vowden, Dave Jordan and Ray Langdon who took second place with a shot difference of +22.
However, there was one team who won all three of their games and therefore emerged as the overall winners with 6 points and + 14 shot difference. Jenny Rimeur, who was also in the winning team on Opening Day, was the winning skip with John Bewhay and Carmella Knight completing the team. Congratulations to them and to all the players who made it such an enjoyable and fun afternoon.

Devonshire Trophy – Opening Day 2025
The 2025 season at the Sun Bowls Club got off to a great start on Sunday 13th April with 47 members taking part in the Devonshire Trophy for Opening Day. With the green having been open for roll-ups since the 31st March, this was the first opportunity for competitive bowls for the new season and it was encouraging to see the green full to capacity. The traditional minutes silence around the flagpole to remember members who have passed away since the the start of the 2024 season was followed by a ‘star burst’. A jack is placed in the centre of the green and members stand with one foot in the ditch and bowl one wood. The winner is the player whose wood is closest to the jack once all the woods have come to a rest which, on this occasion, was Marie Jacques, who won bottle of bubbly.
Then it was on to the serious matter for the day. 16 teams in total competed for ‘Opening Day’ honours over 3 games of 8 ends on a green which was running very well for the start of the season. Conditions were dry and bright, if a little chilly in the wind. There were some closely fought contests – and some not so close! But all the games were played in a friendly, competitive and supportive atmosphere in the true spirit of the game.
At the end of the day, 3 teams finished with three wins out of three thus scoring 6 points. So the result was decided on shot difference. Just missing out on the runners-up spot was the team led by Eileen Vowden, along with Alan Le Sueur and Alan Booth, who achieved a +plus 8 shot difference. However, with an impressive shot difference of +16, it was Colin Rabet, Dave Robinson and Ellen McNally who took second place.
But with an even more impressive shot difference of +20, it was Cathy Le Sueur who led her team of Jenny Rimeur and George Reid to the winners podium and therefore claiming the first Sunday competition title of 2025. Congratulations to them and to all who took part in what was agreed was a successful and enjoyable day.
